Geo-tagging and your security

Imagine the savvy burglar who builds a database of internet users by their usernames. In this database she keeps a list of real names, home addresses, work addresses and phone numbers. It is bound to happen. Of course I seriously doubt it is as easy to happen as the most conspiracy prone reader would like it to be. With geo-tagging becoming ever more popular and the new Foursquare becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives you can rest assured someone, an ex-spouse perhaps, would watch it to see just when the “victim” is away so she can slip back into the home and get that priceless photo of them in a?compromising?position.

With Foursquare, not to single them out because they are “just the medium for transferring the data”, signing a deal with NBC and the Olympics the popularity of that particular geo-tagging site will skyrocket. So will it result the evil rising to the?surface?in people and these types of sites being used for evil purposes?

Think about it. You send a tweet from the local diner that you are enjoying a chili popper and Cherry Coke with friends. Thirty minutes later you return home to find a note pinned stuck to your door. “Sorry we missed you! Saw your tweet but stopped by to see if we could catch you. Love, Mom and Dad.”

That would be benign. What if you send a photo to Twitpic from Cancun and in the photo is everyone who lives in your home. You return home eight days later to a completely empty apartment. Cleaned out …
